This is probably the hardest sounding song on DAMN. The 808s sound insane on this track and is probably the closest thing we’ve got to Backseat Freestyle or m.a.a.d city since GKMC. Trying to pick apart and decipher the themes and messages in the lyrics for this song is so fulfilling. Generally speaking, the song is about Kendrick’s relationship with his blackness and all that comes with it. He praises it and he critiques it. The album as a whole is about self-reflection so the best way to kick that off is to analyze his/our own blackness.
